Responsibilities
The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) performs clinical
laboratory procedures in assigned sections to detect identify
measure and report data used in the diagnosis and treatment of
disease. The MLT uses tecnhical skills instrumentation information
systems and other resources to perform waived and moderate
procedures as classified under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement
Amendment (CLIA) in order to provided clinical laboratory support
to all user groups in the hospital and medical community. Performs
duties under the supervision of the Clinical Laboratory Scientist
(CLS) or physician and may not perform high complexity testing.
Responsibilities 1 Job Specific Duties 1.1 Receives, evaluates
specimen quality and performs waived and moderately complex
procedures as classified under the CLIA. 1.2 Test results are
evaluated for acceptability, reasonableness and medical
consequences prior to report. 1.3 Performs Quality Control at
appropriate intervals and whenever indicated. Results an daction
taken are well documented. Performs proficiency surveys. 1.4
Assumes responsibility for daily instrument maintenance and reagent
inventory. Identifies basic instrument problems; troubleshoots
problems according to specified procedures and documents actions
taken. 1.5 Assists in orientation and training of new staff to
basic department functions. 1.6 Assumes responsibility for
remaining current regarding departmental information (i.e. staff
meetings, policy/procedure changes, inservices, etc.) 1.7 Prepares,
calibrates, and maintains equipment, trouble-shooting as needed,
documenting actions, and reporting instrument status to co-workers.
Meets standard: Performs regularly assigned
maintenance/calibrations. 1.8 Recognizes and takes action on all
quality control situations requiring remedial action. Meets
standard: 1-2 undocumented QC problems per year. 1.9 Maintains work
area in a neat and orderly manner, disinfecting work area at least
once per shift and cleaning up reagent or specimen spills as soon
as possible. 1.10 As required, records date of receipt, expiration
date, lot number, date put into use, and identification of
reagent/supplies. Meets standard: No more than 1 documented
omission. 1.11 Assures good transition at end of shift by checking
that adequate supplies/reagents are available for the next shift.

specimens.
